PLANO - Plano appeared comfortable Tuesday night as they hosted Carrollton Creekview in their final game before district play begins.
The Lady Wildcats played loose and confident as they cut the night short, winning the match in three games while receiving solid play from their seniors.
“They played good volleyball tonight,” said Jennifer Cron, Plano head coach. “We had a low amount of errors and played efficiently as a team and individually. They were very relaxed and when you are relaxed like that it makes it more fun, and they were having fun out there.”
Plano senior Christina Krone finished the night with 13 kills to lead the team while senior Danielle Caldwell put down nine.
On defense, senior Leslie Mirarchi played an important role as she notched a game-high eight blocks.
“Both of our outside hitters showed up tonight,” Cron said. “They came out on fire and confident in what they were doing. [Mary Elizabeth] Hooper was setting the ball in the right places and they just played solid.”
In the first game, Hooper, a senior, and Mirarchi combined for a block as Plano took a 4-1 lead before exchanging serves. Hooper then got her first kill and Plano went on a six-point scoring run. The Lady Wildcats put together a sound stretch overall, outscoring the Lady Mustangs, 11-4.
Later, Caldwell, Mirarchi, Hooper and Krone had a streak of five straight kills as the Lady Wildcats extended their lead 18-10.
Creekview scored four straight, but reliable defense from Hooper and Caldwell helped the Lady Wildcats keep the ball alive before Caldwell finished it off with a kill.
Plano scored seven of the last 10 points in the first game, winning 25-17.
In game two Plano jumped out to a 6-4 lead before going on a series of three-point scoring streaks. Again the offense was provided by Krone, Mirarchi, Caldwell and Hooper. That quartet led the way for Plano as they extended their lead to 16-6.
Late in the game, Caldwell provided another lay-out dig to give the Lady Wildcats an opportunity to finish the game.
Plano defeated Creekview, 25-14, in game two and looked superbly confident as they headed into game three.
While Creekview senior Brittany McDonald provided plenty of punch for the Lady Mustangs, her 10 kills were not enough to overcome the Lady Wildcats as Plano continually received consistent offense from their seniors.
Krone put down five kills in game three, scoring four within the first six Plano points.
Later, the Lady Wildcats strung together eight straight points, going up 17-7, as senior Quinn McKee scored two consecutive aces in that stretch.
As Plano extended their advantage, Cron inserted some fresh legs for her seniors, hoping to get some valuable playing experience before district begins.
“We have a very competitive team,” Cron said. “They all want to get in there and play and show what they can do. I feel just as comfortable having them in as I do any of the other girls.”
Some of the girls had a few moments of miscommunication though, allowing six straight points and bringing the score to 18-14. However, the Lady Wildcats were able to pull it all together as Hooper set up senior Brittany Fossier for the final kill of the match with Plano winning, 25-16.
Plano will host Allen Friday night at 7 p.m. to open District 9-5A play, and after losing to Allen in the Coppell Tournament over the weekend, Cron is excited to get down to business.
“I am glad we get to have them at home first,” Cron said. “I think it will be a competitive game and it could go either way. I just hope that, like tonight, everybody shows up on Friday.”
